Regina – Cancer affects many, and one of Regina’s main fundraisers to combat it got under way.

The annual Relay for Life held a kickoff event at the Cornwall Center Friday.

The event had two cancer survivors, Jan Weisgerber and Gabriel Reaume, speak to a group of people. They spoke about their struggles with cancer and why they participate in Relay for Life.

Reaume is a survivor of mesophelioma cancer, a type of lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. At 11 years of age he is a relay for life ambassador for the second year.

“I am a cancer survivor and a year ago I just recently survived my battle with cancer.” Reaume said. “So I wanted to go out there and tell people that cancer can be beat.”

The event takes place on June 19th  and will see teams walk around the Douglas Park track. They will be passing a baton to one and other to show their commitment to working together towards one common goal: a world where no Canadian fears cancer.
