Statue of Liberty evacuated in New York City

WATCH: Evacuees waiting on the ferry from Ellis Island said they were told to disembark without being given an explanation.

The Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island in New York City were evacuated Friday morning while hundreds of people toured the landmark.

The evacuation was ended around 2:30 p.m. after the NYPD’s bomb squad swept the area, according to NBC News in New York.

Hundreds of people could be seen being shepherded out of the building in a video posted on Twitter shortly after the evacuation began.

People tweeting from the island initially reported a suspicious package had been found and bomb disposal teams and SWAT Teams were on scene.

No suspicious package was found, according to CNN.
