EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Jim Prentice spent the first full day of the election campaign in his home town of Grande Cache.
Prentice toured the coal mine where he and his father Eric worked for years after his family moved to Alberta from Ontario.
Prentice, in a speech to mine workers, emphasized his proposed budget is the best solution to getting Alberta off day-to-day dependence on oil prices.

About 200 people lost their jobs at Grande Cache Coal earlier this year when the company shut its strip mining and cleaning plant due to low coal prices.
Some members of the United Mine Workers of America continue to work at the company’s underground mine.
Prentice also received a gift from family friends, a framed photograph of Eric in his Toronto Maple Leafs jersey.
Eric Prentice was the youngest player ever signed by the Leafs, at 17, and played five games for them in 1943.
Prentice has often credited the community work done by his parents as his inspiration to enter public life.
