New online tool gives your neighbourhood a profile based on postal codes

WATCH: How much do you know about your neighbours? A new report by a marketing firm has some startling insights into the make-up of neighbourhoods across B.C. including yours. Nadia Stewart reports.

You can tell a lot about a person from their postal code.

At least, that’s the thinking behind a new product created by Environics Analytics. Called Prizm5, it segments each postal code in Canada into 68 different lifestyle types, from “Grads & Pads” (found around Kits Beach in Vancouver) to “Aging in Suburbia” (much of the Township of Langley).

It’s intended for businesses and non-profit organizations, allowing them to have a better sense of the demographics, education and income of people living in various neighbourhoods – along with what their lifestyle choices might be like.

Environics say they spent a year developing Prizm5, which draws on sources of data, including the National Household Survey and credit-based data.

“PRIZM5 paints a vivid picture of the changing face of Canada,” says Jan Kestle, founder and president of Environics, in a statement. “Because changes happen gradually over time, they may not always be noticeable. However, when we analyzed the data for PRIZM5 at the neighbourhood level, the differences became apparent in the new 68 lifestyle types.”
