Elderly woman dies after being run over by Jeep in central Edmonton

EDMONTON — An elderly woman died in hospital after being hit by a vehicle in a central Edmonton parking lot. The 88-year-old woman was walking through the Quasar Bottle Depot parking lot near 105 Avenue and 95 Street around 3 p.m. Tuesday, when a Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 68-year-old man, backed up from a stall and hit the woman.

She was knocked to the ground and pinned under the Jeep, resulting in life-threatening injuries. The woman was taken to hospital in critical condition, where she died on Tuesday night.

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit is investigating. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash. Police said it is too early to know if charges will be laid.

This is Edmonton’s sixth pedestrian fatality for 2015.
