Creator of Signing Time! flies to Maple Ridge to help displaced child with Down syndrome

WATCH: A Maple Ridge family who lost everything in a recent fire was at the receiving end of a very special surprise. Asa Rehman has the story.

A Maple Ridge child with Down syndrome received a surprise visit from one of his favourite TV stars today – and a new lease on life.

Rachel Coleman of the TV show Signing Time! flew up to Maple Ridge to meet with Ryder Ego and give his family a full supply of DVDs and educational material from the show.

Signing Time! teaches children how to communicate in a variety of ways, and Ego’s mom Kayla says it’s been critical in helping him develop.

“It’s [how he] learned to communicate with us and how he continues to learn how to communicate with other people. Without it, he’s almost stunted,” said Kayla.

But their DVDs have been trapped in their Maple Ridge apartment, along with the rest of their possessions, after a fire in their apartment complex last month.

It displaced over 100 residents, who have scrambled in recent weeks to find new accommodation and possessions. It’s been particularly stressful on the Ego family.

“He’s been completely miserable. Screaming constantly, on top of not having a home and eating in a restaurant – which is also something he hates – he also doesn’t have anything of his,” says Kayla.

When Coleman heard about the family’s troubles from a Global News viewer, she decided to help.

“I know when you have a kid with a disability, when you find something that works, it’s a lifesaver,” she said.
