Team of breast cancer survivors given award for saving two men’s lives

WATCH: A dragon boat team was honoured today for saving the lives of two men on the water almost a year ago. Asa Rehman reports.

A team of women decked in pink were recognized for their brave actions on the water at the 103rd annual Honour and Rescue Awards.

“We don’t feel like heroes at all. We just did what he had to do that day,” said Juanita Peglar at the ceremony, which honours those who have put their lives on the line during a water rescue.

It was in April 2014 that Fort Langley Canoe Club Fort-itude dragon boat team was about to begin its usual Saturday practice session when they heard someone yelling for help.

“I looked down past the dock a little bit, and there was an overturned person,” said Heather Innes.

“I just said to our crew somebody needs help, let’s go.”

Another bystander dove into to help the drowning man, only to need saving as well.

The team – made up entirely of cancer survivors – were able to row to the two men and rescue them.
