Stepmother denies killing Meika Jordan in police interrogation video

CALGARY –  Video of a police interrogation of the stepmother accused in the death of six-year-old Meika Jordan was shown in court Friday.

Marie Magoon and father Spencer Jordan are accused of first-degree murder in the death of Meika.

Magoon was arrested and taken to police headquarters for questioning nearly a month after the young girl died on Nov. 14, 2011. She and Jordan were both considered suspects at the time.

The Crown alleges Meika endured four days of torture and abuse before she died, which started with a severe burn to her hand. The prosecution alleges Magoon held her hand over an open flame, but in the interrogation video, she tells a different story about the burn.

“I didn’t see it,” says Magoon in the video. “She came running to me. I was downstairs in the kitchen and she came running to me and told me that she burnt herself with that.”

“With which?” asks the detective.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“The curl…the straightener,” says Magoon.

The detective continued asking about the weekend’s events, to which Magoon said Meika frequently lied and had to be punished.

“Meika was in trouble for lying that day, and I was trying to get her to do 20, 25 jumping jacks to get her out of her trouble,” says Magoon.

The interrogation lasted several hours, during which Magoon maintained her composure.

“There’s no way based on the information we have that this could be anything else but a homicide,” says the detective.

“I don’t believe that honestly,” says Magoon.

“Well you are gonna (sic) have to start believing it,” says the detective.

When Magoon is shown photos of Meika’s injuries, her responses become more emotional.

“I didn’t do any of this. I’m sorry, but I did not. I did not do this and you’re wrong.”

“It’s either you or Spencer,” says the detective. “Would you agree with me that it could be nobody else?”

The police interview ends with Magoon repeatedly denying her involvement in Meika’s death.

“Just tell me the truth, Marie,” says the detective.

“I didn’t do this,” she says.

“Who did then?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t do this.”

The trial is expected to continue for another four to five weeks.
