TORONTO – The city’s executive committee is meeting today to discuss expanding gaming options at the Woodbine racetrack.
Mayor John Tory and committee members will decide on whether to allow the city manager to undergo a public consultation process and compose a report for further review.
The analysis will consist of technical planning requirements, merits and risks of expanded gaming at the racetrack.
Woodbine Entertainment Group, the non-profit group which operates the racetrack, has reportedly been in talks with Mayor John Tory and city officials to explore the idea of introducing table games.
The move comes nearly two years after city council voted against approving a downtown Toronto casino and the Woodbine racetrack expansion.
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. has said it is looking at expanding gambling in the Greater Toronto Area but needs the approval of municipalities to do so.
Size of the facility, the economic and social impacts, and projected revenue is expected to be included in the report.
If approved, the expansion report proposal will go to council for a final vote.
