Crown could label Giovanni D’Amico dangerous offender

MONTREAL — Forty-eight-year-old Giovanni D’Amico is a businessman from Montreal’s NDG district.

Last October, he earned another title: convicted rapist.

He was found guilty of sexually assaulting four women, all sex workers.

At his trial, the court heard he punched and strangled the young women, almost killing one in one case.

By law, he faces up to 14 years in prison for his crimes, but crown prosecutor Anne Gauvin is considering an even tougher sentence.

Gauvin told Global News she is looking into having D’Amico labelled a dangerous offender.

It’s a legal designation for the worst criminals – one which carries an indefinite prison sentence.

“The crown is not closing any doors,” said Gauvin.

“We don’t know who Mr. D’Amico is, we’re waiting for reports to identify his personality and the risks he reprsents.”

A spokesperson from Stella, a group which supports street workers, said she was pleased with the legal move.

“I think it’s great news, if it happens,” noted Anne-Aude Caouette.

The prosecutor’s office is expected to make a final decision on its intention to seek dangerous offender status on April 24.

D’Amico is appealing the guilty verdicts.
