Man pulled from burning car meets hero who saved his life

WINNIPEG — Steve Guy says he’s lucky to be alive after being rescued from his burning car Tuesday night but he doesn’t remember what happened or who saved him.

“The next thing I remember is waking up in the ambulance,” said Guy, “I’d like to find out who he is so I can thank him.”

The young man who pulled Guy out of his burning car is 21-year old Tristan Gareau, and Friday they met for the first time.

“Hi Tristan, how are you?” said Guy shaking Gareau’s hand firmly, “good, good,” said Gareau.

“Thank you very much,” said Guy.

“You’re welcome come in here,” said Gareau as the two men hugged.

On Tuesday, Gareau was driving home after a first date. He stopped after seeing a car drove into a condo complex on Kenaston Boulevard. Guy was inside, unconscious, when suddenly the car burst into flames.

“I decided to go in there,” said Gareau, “it was really smoky I don’t know how you handled all the smoke, it was very smoky very hot in there. I had to undo your seat belt and try and drag you out.”

“Wow, no I don’t remember any of that,” said Guy.

Guy, 65, has Diabetes. While parking his car in his spot at the condo he had a sudden reaction he never experienced before.

“I think back and wonder did I miss any signs, I don’t think i did, unfortunately you always feel, when something like this happens you think that was dumb on my part,” said Guy.

Fortunately, Guy only has a couple scrapes on his back from being dragged, Gareau even apologized.

“No, no, if that’s all I get out of it, you know, being that close to dying, I can live with it,” laughed Guy.

The nightclub DJ and retired government worker met during a terrifying ordeal, now forming a lasting bond.

“I just hope other people would do the same thing for a gentleman like this or for anyone at all,” said Gareau.

“I’m glad I got to meet you,” said Guy as the men hugged one last time before parting ways.

Guy says he doesn’t want to drive anytime soon.

Gareau says he’s been having nightmares, thinking what if he didn’t stop or pull Guy out of the car. He hopes after meeting Guy and seeing he’s OK, it’ll ease his mind.

“I really wanted to meet you,” said Guy, “what you did was amazing.”

“I’m glad you’re OK, I just wanted to make sure you were OK.” said Gareau.

The two, now friends, have exchanged phone numbers and plan to get together soon.
