Dallas Smith, Kiesza among early Juno Award winners

TORONTO — Langley, B.C. country singer Dallas Smith and Calgary pop artist Kiesza were among the winners announced on the first night of the 2015 Juno Awards.

Smith earned the Country Album prize for Lifted and Kiesza received awards Saturday for Dance Recording (Sound of a Woman) and Video (“Hideaway”).

Also honoured with Junos were Toronto acts Magic! (Breakthrough Group), Bahamas (Songwriter and Adult Alternative Album) and The Weeknd (R&B/Soul Recording) as well as veteran performers Sarah McLachlan (Adult Contemporary Album) and Fred Penner (Children’s Album).

The Juno for Pop Album went to Lights for Little Machines and Group of the Year was Hamilton’s Arkells.

British singer Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour was named International Album of the Year.

The Juno for Aboriginal Album went to Tanya Tagaq’s Animism, while Jane Bunnett and Maqueque won Jazz Album and Diana Panton won Vocal Jazz Album.

Maladie D’Amour by Jimmy Hunt was named Francophone Album of the Year.

Devin Townsend Project earned the award for Metal/Hard Rock Music Album and Caribou’s Our Love was the winner in the Electronic Album category.

The Rap Recording of the Year honour went to Naturally Born Strangers for The Legends League Presents: Naturally Born Strangers.

Winners were also announced in blues, classical, reggae, Christian and instrumental categories. The full list of winners is available at junoawards.ca.

Adam Messinger was named Producer of the Year and Eric Ratz won the award for Recording Engineer.

Geddy Lee was on hand to accept the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award on behalf of his band Rush.

Juno winners in the top categories will be handed out Sunday night in a televised show from Hamilton, Ont. hosted by Jacob Hoggard.
