Calgary police introduce new interim chief as Rick Hanson retires

CALGARY – After 40 years with the Calgary Police Service, Chief Rick Hanson retired on Friday.

Hanson announced his resignation on Feb. 25, saying it had been an “honour serving the people of Calgary.”

Paul Cook, a 25-year veteran of the Calgary Police Service, is serving as the interim chief of police until a replacement can be found. He was appointed to the position earlier this month.

On Friday, the Calgary Police Commission introduced Cook to the public at a morning news conference.

“Like his predecessor, Paul Cook is a man who leads by example and brings exceptional strengths and insights into the office of the chief,” said Rodney Fong. “We have every confidence in Chief Cook, and he understands all areas of the police service intimately.”

As for when the police commission will select the next chief of police, Fong said they are in no rush.

“We have every confidence we have the right man looking after the service,” said Fong. “We will take the time to conduct the search properly.”

For his part, Cook says he wanted the job due to his pride for the Calgary Police Service.

“I’ve been fortunate to see the leadership of Chief Hanson, and I truly want to be a part of that continuity and that transition when our next chief is appointed.”

Cook assured the public they shouldn’t see any day-to-day changes in the business or operations of police.

He also took a moment to reflect on his predecessor’s long career with the Calgary Police Service.

“This day is more, for me, about our Chief Rick Hanson… who in my humble opinion is the strongest police chief this country has ever seen.”

Cook says he doesn’t wish to be the chief of police on a permanent basis, but is proud to fill the role in the interim.
