Four-year-old Ohio girl saves family from house fire

A four-year-old girl’s quick-thinking may have saved her family from a devastating fire that completely destroyed their Marion, Ohio home.

Young Dakota McIntyre says she woke up early Monday morning while her family was still asleep to discover the house was on fire.

“When I went in the back room, the big couch was on fire. I woke mom up and told her there was a big fire,” Mcintyre told Fox-5 News in Atlanta, Georgia.

She rushed to tell her mother, Melissa McIntyre, who alerted the rest of the family.

The blaze eventually consumed the entire home and all the possessions, including Dakota’s stepfather’s collection of photos from his service in the Vietnam War.

“We were all sleeping with the doors shut,” Melissa McIntyre told The Marion Star. “My 4-year-old came and woke everybody up. We had no clue.”

The fire department said the fire caused approximately $50,000 worth of damage to the home. It’s believed an electrical short from a power bar was responsible for starting the blaze.

Dakota’s grandfather suffered first-degree burns, but the only reported fatality was the family’s pet cat.

City Assistant Fire Chief Terry Bowdre said the house was equipped with smoke alarms, but “as far as we could tell [they] weren’t working.”

Meaning Dakota’s may have just saved the family from perishing.

“I was brave,” said Dakota.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with finding clothing and lodging following the fire.
