“The party’s over” as gas prices rise in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG — “The party’s over” for Winnipeg motorists who have been enjoying some of the lowest gasoline prices in the country.

Some stations have already hiked the cost per litre to 99.9 cents, up from 88.4. Experts say the higher price will become the norm in the coming days.

“The retailers in Winnipeg, in response to ultra competition, were offering gas at virtually no retail margin,” Dan McTeague from gasbuddy.com told Global News Thursday, adding that the bargain gas prices couldn’t last. “The party’s over,” he said.

Gas prices had already started to rise across the country, with Winnipeg among the last bargain hold-outs. Now Manitoba’s capital is facing one of the biggest price hikes to bring the costs here in line with other markets.

McTeague says a number of factors are driving up the price at the pump in Canada, including the lower value of the Canadian dollar, and shutdowns at US refineries due to labour disputes or cold weather which reduce the supply of gasoline.
