Community support fills empty shelves at Fredericton Community Kitchen

FREDERICTON – The shelves at the Fredericton Community Kitchen are stocked with food. Cans, boxes, and bags fill every inch of the pantry.

But just on Tuesday it was a different story, says volunteer Sawyer Adams.

“Every shelf was basically near the end, there was nothing on here. I put stuff away every day, and all this stuff was basically empty in here before today,” Adams said.

The kitchen serves three meals a day, to around 100 people at a time, and prepares outreach meals for schools and other organizations. For clients like Mark MacKinney, it’s concerning when they hear there may not be enough to go around.

“If the kitchen is running low on food, I think that donations would really come in handy this time of year,” he said. “And the fact that if it doesn’t come in, there’s going to be a lot of hungry people running around with empty stomachs.”

On Tuesday, word spread that the kitchen was in need. Within hours, donations started to pour in.

Kathy Warren says she heard the kitchen needed food, so she came by to donate. After she checked the Fredericton Community Kitchen’s website for information, she was surprised by how many people it serves.

“I had no idea the extent that this serves the community,” said Warren. “I didn’t realize it was three meals a day, I didn’t realize there was outreach, and I didn’t realize there was no government funding.”

With the outpouring of donations from the community, Adams estimates they have enough for about a month of meals.

“I didn’t think people were that nice in the city, but I can’t thank everybody enough for donating all this beautiful food and helping out the community.”
