WATCH: Whalley residents meet with RCMP to address safety concerns

Dozens of Whalley residents turned up at an open meeting to discuss crime and public safety in that Surrey neighbourhood.

This is the fourth in a series of events designed to allow residents to express their fears and frustrations about ongoing crime.

Members of the RCMP re-assured residents about safety concerns, saying 100 new officers will be deployed to the areas dealing with the most crime.

“We call them boots on the ground,” said Inspector Ghalib Bhayani with Surrey RCMP. “Those officers will be out on the road, depending on what area they are deployed to.”

Recent crimes in the neighbourhood include two stabbings.

On Feb. 15, a teenager was stabbed at Whalley Athletic Park.

Less than a week later, there was another stabbing at King George Boulevard and 105-A Avenue.

Both residents and police agree community meetings are important.
