WATCH ABOVE: There are only so many sword swallowers in the world these days. Even more rare is a woman that can do it at nine months pregnant. Jennifer Lindgren reports.
TORONTO – Watching someone swallow a sword is a cringe-worthy experience at the best of times – so just imagine if that sworld swallower was also nine months pregnant. Believe it or not, that woman exists.
Twenty-seven-year-old performer Veronica Hernandez of Grand Prairie, Texas – who uses the moniker Jai Le Bait on stage – is raising eyebrows for her death-defying act – baby bump and all. She even plans to perform during World Swallower’s Day in just over a week.
Jokes aside, the idea of putting 14 inches of steel down your gullet is still a dangerous one. Add an unborn baby to the mix and alarms go off.
“It doesn’t interfere with the baby itself. If I take the precautions for myself, then the baby is fine,” Hernandez told KSAT in San Antonio.
Those precautions are incredibly important. Just ask any pregnant woman – your body just isn’t the same while you’re carrying. Basically, the road map inside your body changes.
“Being pregnant you have to take in your posture, the difference in weight from my belly and you have to remember all of this while you’re preparing to pose and get your body in alignment with the sword,” Hernandez explained to CBS reporter Jennifer Lindgren. “You have to make sure it’s absolutely straight.”
The phrase “sharp as a razor” doesn’t exactly describe the prop she uses either. Hernandez’s sword is dull.
“Even though it’s a blade and we’re doing something that other people aren’t doing, we’re not going to kill ourselves, so it can’t be sharp,” she continued.
While she may or may not have your approval, her doctors seem okay with it.
“They’ve all said, ‘You know what you’re doing,’” Hernandez added.
