Mudslide closes Highway 97A between Sicamous and Grindrod, BC

A residence had to be evacuated and three vehicles were damaged after a mudslide came down closing Highway 97A, 13 kilometres south of Sicamous, British Columbia around midnight Sunday night.

Mud and debris covered the road, causing the section of Highway 97A to be closed between Grindrod and Sicamous. The cause is under investigation, but the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said it’s “likely related to unseasonably warm and wet conditions over the past week.”

The home was knocked off its foundation and heavily damaged, though there are no reports of injuries, according to the ministry. The vehicles that were pushed onto the highway have since been removed by ministry crews.

Geo-technical engineers are assessing the area to determine stability, extent of the slide and any further property damage.

Until then, traffic is being re-routed along Highway 97B through Salmon Arm and Highway 1.
