An eerie silence hangs over an area near Princeton where a woman was found shot to death in her home last week.
Gisele Duckham, 56, had been living on her own after her husband passed away a few years ago.
Neighbours say she had recently allowed Roger Badour, 63, to stay in a trailer in her backyard.
“She felt sorry for him. He had no place to live is my understanding. She had a holiday trailer there and she was going to rent it out to him I guess,” said friend Babs Williams.
But earlier this week, Badour was charged with first degree murder in connection to the killing.
Badour is a convicted sex offender who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.
Duckham’s neighbours did not know much about Badour but they now say there was something strange about his behaviour.
“Any time I did see him, he just looked away,” said neighbour Graham Green.
Police stopped Badour for a traffic violation in Penticton last week and became suspicious after he allegedly gave them a false name.
When they searched his car, they found three guns, two of which were loaded.
Neighbours describe Duckham as a friendly woman, who was perhaps too nice for her own good.
“One would say she could be a little gullible at times,” said Green. “She trusted everybody.”
Neighbour Tony Rutter says the incident has left him flabbergasted.
“Nobody expected that up here,” Rutter said.
Badour is due to appear in court November 23.
