The moon: A planet or star? QVC host, fashion designer debate astronomy 101

Watch the video above: QVC host Shawn Killinger and fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi bicker over whether or not the moon is a star or a planet.

TORONTO – Astronomers everywhere — heck, even grade-schoolers — will likely give a collective face-palm after watching this painful video where QVC shopping channel host Jane Treacy and fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi argue about whether or not the moon is a star or a planet.

It all starts off harmlessly enough when Killinger showcases a green cardigan and remarks, “It almost kind of looks like what the Earth looks like when you’re a bazillion miles away from the planet moon.”

(We won’t even start on the fact that there is no such number.)

It all seems good because she stops and mocks herself, “The planet moon,” she says. “From THE moon looking back at the Earth.”

Then, “Isn’t the moon a star?”

The topic of debate: the moon. Nicole Mortillaro

“No, the moon is a planet, darling,” Mizrahi says.

You just need to watch the rest of it to see just how painful the “debate” is. Killinger insists that the moon is a star (though, we’ll give her points for knowing the sun is a star).

“Come on, it’s a planet,” Mizrahi says at one point. “But things live on it. That means it’s a planet.”

“Is that what Google said?” Killinger responds.

What’s more disturbing is that Mizrahi has appeared several times — and was once a runner-up — on the trivia show Celebrity Jeopardy!

Correction: An earlier version of the story identified the host as Jane Treacy.
