Frost Fit attracting competitors from across Western Canada

WINNIPEG — It’s not your typical workout and that’s why people who do cross fit can’t get enough of it.

“It’s this idea of communal suffering, I know that might sound bad but it brings people together,” said Cross Fit Winnipeg owner Tania Tetrault Vrga.

The former world championship cross fit competitor knows what it’s like to become addicted to the sport.

“I would lie awake at night thinking I wonder what we’re going to do tomorrow,” said Tetrault Vrga. “I would be so excited about it.”

And it’s not just her life that was changed by the strength, cardio and mobility training.

“I had done the every day gym thing… it just wasn’t for me, there was just no real drive,” said competitor Justin Foy.

“It changes your mental mindset, that you can accomplish anything you want to do,” said competitor Jay Wong.

They’re just two of 170 competitors from across western Canada who are in Winnipeg for Frost Fit – a competition that will find the fittest team in the prairies for the first time this weekend.

It’s also an extreme training regime that’s not for everyone. Critics warn athletes can over-exert themselves during the high intensity workouts.

But this physiotherapist says preparation is the key.

“A lot of people that just dive into it… they lack the just the fundamental ability to actually be able to get into an overhead lock out clean without compensating,” said physiotherapist Ricky Paggao.

You can watch Frost Fit Saturday and Sunday at Cross Fit Winnipeg on Lagimodiere Boulevard. The first event starts at 9:00 a.m. and the athletes will compete all day.
