SASKATOON – Another holiday season is coming to an end and students will soon be hitting the books again in Saskatoon. CAA Saskatchewan is reminding drivers to be alert around schools and playgrounds.

Both public and Catholic school classes resume Monday in the Bridge City.

Fines for speeding in a school zone start at $140 plus two-dollars for each kilometre over the speed limit.

Drivers caught going more than 30 km/h over the limit will see their fine increase to four-dollars for each kilometer over the limit. There is also a victim of crime surcharge and three SGI demerit points.

Here are a few safety tips for motorists:

  • Slow down to the posted speed limit.
  • Be prepared to stop.
  • Always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children.
  • Allow students enough time to cross the street safely.
  • Watch for children darting out from between parked cars.

CAA also encourages guardians to teach their children to stop and look both ways before crossing the road.

Saskatoon was under an extreme cold warning for most of the weekend. The city was advising motorists Friday of the affect these temperatures have on driving conditions.

According to the city, the cold combined with ice crystals in the air settle and cause roadways to be more slippery than usual winter driving conditions.  Condensation from vehicle exhaust may also contribute to slippery streets.
