‘Luckily nobody got injured’: West Edmonton resident after vehicle plows through neighbourhood

Watch above: A number of west Edmonton residents are dealing with the headache of a five-car collision that occurred on Christmas Eve. Lisa Wolansky has more on the damage and speaks with frustrated residents.

EDMONTON — Police tape remained draped around several vehicles in the Elmwood neighbourhood Sunday, after a vehicle slammed into them early Wednesday morning.

Around 1:20 a.m. on Dec. 24, Cathy Julien says she was in the basement of her west Edmonton home enjoying an evening of games with her husband and adult children.

“I was just about to go to bed and I heard this, ‘bang, crash’ and I ran to look out the window and I saw that my daughter’s vehicle had been moved significantly,” she said.

Noticing several other vehicles had been hit, Julien phoned the police while her husband, son and daughter ran outside to see what was going on.

“My son was out the door in a flash,” said Julien. “The reason they ran out is because the vehicle was taking off, it wasn’t staying put.”

Police and EMS crews were called to the scene. Police have released few details, but say an arrest was made. Area residents say it’s fortunate no one was injured in the ordeal.

“It’s only vehicles. They could be repaired or replaced,” said Ralph Kwasnycia. “Luckily nobody got injured.”

“I’m really glad they [her kids] weren’t coming home when this person decided to drive by so irresponsibly,” added Julien. “It’s scary to think [the driver] could have killed somebody.”

In total, five vehicles that were parked along 88 Avenue, near 161 Street, were struck by the vehicle. While relieved there were no injuries, residents wonder when the mess will be cleaned up. The vehicles have been sitting in the same place for five days and there is shattered glass and debris on the road.

Many of the vehicles are not able to be driven and tow trucks have to be booked through the insurance companies. But because it’s the holidays, residents say it has been tough getting someone to answer their calls.

“It’s nothing but a huge inconvenience,” said Julien. “It’s been very difficult for us because we have to look at it every time we go outside.”

“It’s getting frustrating,” added Kwasnycia. “Just remove the vehicles.”

Two of the vehicles involved belonged to the Julien family.
