LRPS thwarting Christmas thieves

For many, the holidays are a time to be with family, a time to give a loved one something special.  But Constable Baker from the Lethbridge Regional Police Service knows some have a much different approach to the holiday season.

“They know you’re not there. Then they can simply walk around the back, break in, and have at it.“

With sticky fingers and a heart two sizes too small, the Christmas crook always awakens during the holiday season.  According to Blair, the increase in thefts is evident.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“As we get closer to Christmas, and after Christmas as well, because it’s really the holiday season. Where everyone knows there’s gifts and people are gone. As we get closer, there tends to be a significant increase.”

Baker has worked with the LRPS for nearly a decade.  He knows the trends in the city and does his best to help people avoid break-ins.

“You can get yourself a little motion sensor light, a nice bright spot light.  That is just tremendous in getting someone to go away.”

According to police, there are several other key ways to avoid a becoming a victim.  They include locking doors and closing windows and not posting when and where you’re leaving for a holiday vacation on social media.  Police also stress to avoid leaving valuables close to windows, but most of all, Baker wants the public to be aware.

“If you see those suspicious things, or you see those people walking around that just don’t quite seem to make sense. You don’t necessarily have to call all of that in, but pay attention to it.”
