FREDERICTON – A storm bringing a mix of heavy rain, snow and gusts to the Maritimes made for treacherous road conditions on Wednesday that police say are to blame for a crash in New Brunswick that killed three people.

The RCMP say they believe the poor weather contributed to a head-on collision involving a car and tractor-trailer near Fredericton.

It’s not uncommon for parts of the Bedford Highway in Halifax to flood, but the amount of water the area seen Wednesday was out of the ordinary.

Donnie Pellerine, superintendent of streets and sidewalks for the city, said it was one of the worst situations he’s seen.

“This system runs very full and comes up on us very quickly…we have to wait and let it subside,” he said.

There was up to three feet of water flowing across the road on Wednesday afternoon. Police blocked part of the roadway to traffic in both directions. Pedestrians who did try to make it through, had a difficult time.

The city said there was not an easy solution to fix the flooding.

“This problem cannot be cured without a major infrastructure fix,” Pellerine said. “This is everything running at full capacity and unfortunately this is what happens when too much water enters the pipe. It has nowhere to go but up through the street.”

Emergency crews were busy attending accidents across the city, including one where a fire truck that was damaged en route to another accident scene when a vehicle struck it.

The man involved in the accident refused medical treatment.  Police are now investigating, but have not yet laid charges.
