WATCH: Benefit to support Kelowna woman with rare disease

KELOWNA– Just over a year ago, 26 year old Kate Rosvold was an independent young woman.

Vibrant and creative, Rosvold was training for a career as a care aid, until her life took a devastating detour.

What was originally thought to be a bout of depression turned out to be the first stages of a rare, debilitating disease.

It took more than a decade to finally get the diagnosis of Wilson’s Disease, a genetic inability of the body to rid itself of copper.

With copper accumulating in Rosvold’s organs, she lost most physical function, spent months in the hospital and eventually found herself in a nursing home where she can receive round the clock care.

With the diagnosis came treatment, long term therapy to rid Rosvold’s body of the copper build up, a process that can take up to five years.

In the meantime, her family and friends are determined to get her out of the nursing home, saying it’s no place for a 26 year old.

The plan is for Kate to move into an apartment.

Her mother will move in to care for her but she requires a long list of medical equipment not all of which is covered by pharmacare.

Supporters are holding a musical benefit for Kate this Sunday, December 14, 2014 at Evangel Church in Kelowna.

The money they raise will help pay for additional medical equipment.

There are no guarantees about how successful the treatment will ultimately be but the Rosvold’s are hoping for a full recovery.

If you would like to buy a ticket for the benefit, or just make a donation you can do so at http://www.for-kate.eventbrite.com
