CALGARY – Fish and Wildlife officers shot and killed a moose roaming through the northeast community of Marlborough on Friday.
The animal was first spotted wandering around Forest Lawn around 6 a.m.
It later crossed Memorial Drive, before entering the Marlborough Mall parking lot around 8 a.m.
Wildlife officers tried to use tranquilizers to subdue it, but eventually shot and killed the moose in a nearby alley. They say it was acting very aggressively and was considered dangerous to the public.
“It’s a very large animal that’s now very scared,” explains Calgary police Sgt. Paul Magnus. “You get something that is that big and starts to panic – they’ll run, and just run straight.”
Police say the animal was a safety concern and there were several close calls
“They also become aggressive when they’re panicked, so people walking down the street don’t realize this there could run out and it wouldn’t take very much for a moose to trample a person,” added Magnus.

When it turned on the officers, that’s when it had to be euthanized.
A few kilometres away, a second moose but a different result.
Officers were dealing with a female moose in the area of 52nd Street and 23rd Avenue S.E, an area where there are no people and no real dangers, so this time the decision was to pull back and leave her be.
They say their plan was to guide the animal out of the city.

It’s certainly not the first time for a moose to be on the loose in Calgary.
In May, a moose ran rampant through the community of Royal Oak.
Months before, Fish and Wildlife officers had to tranquilize two of the animals in Rocky Ridge so they could be moved to a safer environment.
