Mammoliti wants to trade tax freeze for council seat next to mayor

TORONTO – Is Mayor John Tory willing to trade four years of property tax freezes in order to sit next to his deputy mayor at council? That’s the deal Coun. Giorgio Mammoliti is offering the new mayor to trade seats with Denzil Minnan-Wong.

“If the mayor promises no property tax increases for the next four years, then I might give away my seat,” Mammoliti told reporters at city hall.

But it doesn’t seem like Tory is interested in bartering for seats.

“Deputy mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong had indicated some interest in sitting next to me and I though that was an interesting idea,” he told reporters Wednesday. “It doesn’t really matter to me.”

Mammoliti has what some consider the best seat in the house, and Minnan-Wong wants it for his own.

Minnan-Wong defended the seat-change, saying the mayor and deputy mayor should have a “close working relationship.”

He wouldn’t, however, commit to four years of property tax freezes.

“If [Councillor Mammolliti] wants someone to hold someone to account to keeping taxes down, I’m his guy,” he said. “Well I guess that’s a discussion that I’ll have to have with Councillor Mammoliti. These negotiations in public are never an advised thing to do.”
