Taber ‘stuff a bus’ fueled by student support

For the second straight year at the Taber Stuff a Bus event, the message was loud and clear: Do what you can to help those in need.

High school students were out and ready to get involved for a good cause. One ambitious grade eleven student saying: “The homeless who don’t have food and everything, it really helps them out.  And it’s really surprising how everybody is donating so much money and food and everything.”

By the end of Tuesday night, organizers hope to have two buses stuffed with over 30,000 kilograms of food.  That amount should keep the Taber food bank supplied through the busy holiday season and into February.

The student support throughout the day was impressive.  More than 70 students from four separate high schools were out to help.  Along with food donations, they were also helping round up presents, which Stuff the Buss Coordinator Tamara Miyanaga knows is important during the holiday season.

“We’re collecting gifts for families, because on December 19th and 20th people in need will be able to select a gift for their family members.”

With presents and food coming in at a rapid rate, the busses just kept filling up.  On this day, the generosity of some young volunteers made a real difference. One grade 10 student put it best.

“I think it shows an example of how youth can help out a lot more. And I think that it helps out the community a lot.”

The Taber Food Bank hopes to have an official food weight from the event by Wednesday morning.
