Screw comes loose on Air Canada flight, slams into window next to passenger’s head

A Penticton man got quite the jolt while on an Air Canada Jazz flight recently from Penticton to Vancouver after a screw came loose and slammed into the window next to his head.

“It was pretty terrifying, I was sitting there on my phone half asleep and next thing you know, you heard a sound that was incredibly loud, kind of like a gunshot,” says Langlois. “There was a screw lodged into the window, half rattling around.”

The plane was a Bombardier Dash 8 and the screw came loose from a propeller. Air Canada says that 12 screws are typically on each one.

“Everything from ‘where did the screw come from? to how strong is this window?’ was going through my mind,” he says.

Langlois calmly went to the flight attendant, and told her what happened.

He says the pilot handled the situation well and reassured Langlois there was no depressurization of the cabin, and everything would be fine until they landed.

In a statement, Air Canada said that they were inspecting the aircraft.

“There was no emergency declared and the aircraft landed safely and without incident,” they wrote.

“This is a highly unusual incident and our maintenance personnel in Vancouver have inspected the aircraft and are making the necessary repairs. We do apologize to our passengers for any concern that this incident may have caused.”
