Hundreds of Calgarians support Ferguson in ‘Black Lives Matter’ rally

CALGARY – About 200 people joined together at a rally in downtown Calgary on Tuesday calling for the elimination of racism.

The ‘Black Lives Matter’ protest was held just one day after a grand jury in Ferguson, Mo. decided not to indict the white police officer who killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.

The Calgary event was peaceful, with protesters dressed in black while holding lit candles and placards.

At one point, protestors stood in silence for four-and-a-half minutes, a request made by Brown’s family after Monday’s verdict to symbolize the four-and-a-half hours their son’s body lay on the ground following his death.

“We believe with organization, advocacy, and a concerted effort by community members, it’s possible to change the fundamental way black people are treated in Ferguson and everywhere else,” said a post on the ‘Black Lives Matter’ Facebook event.
