Santa comes to town for annual Winnipeg parade

WINNIPEG – You better watch out because that’s Santa coming at the end of the downtown parade Saturday.

The annual Winnipeg Santa Claus Parade starts at 5 p.m. and will be livestreamed on this web page starting at 5:15 p.m. Mike Koncan will co-host a broadcast of the parade on Shaw Cable 9.

Block parties and downtown street closures will precede the annual parade that launches the Christmas season in Winnipeg.

The Olympic-gold-medal-winning Jennifer Jones curling rink will be the grand marshals of the parade. They’ll be accompanied by Brian Bowman, making his first mayoral appearance at the parade after his election in October.

Shaw and Global News will host games and other activities from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at our block party on Portage Avenue between Fort and Garry streets. The big screen in front of 201 Portage Ave., where Global Winnipeg is located, will show How the Grinch Stole Christmas starting at 4:15 p.m.

Road closures are as follows:

1:30 p.m.: Portage Avenue closes from just east of Sherbrook Street to Portage Avenue East at Westbrook Street

3 p.m.:

  • Southbound Main street closes from McDermot Avenue to Graham Avenue
  • Northbound Main Street closes from St. Mary Avenue to Portage Avenue
  • Pioneer Avenue closes from Main Street to Westbrook Street
  • William Stephenson Way closes from Main Street to Waterfront Drive
