Hurricane Vance begins weakening in the Pacific off Mexico’s coast

MIAMI – Hurricane Vance is beginning to weaken as it swirls in the Pacific off the coast of Mexico.

The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds early Tuesday decreased to near 165 km/h with additional weakening forecast over the next day or so. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Vance could weaken to a tropical storm by the time it reaches Mexico’s coast.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for Mexico’s coast from Mazatlan to Topolobampo.

As of Tuesday, Vance was centred about 650 km southwest of Mazatlan and was moving north-northeast near 20 km/h.

Rainfall caused by Vance is expected to total 101 mm to 200 mm with isolated amounts near 300 mm through Wednesday. The rains could produce life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.
