TORONTO – Just hours after an unmanned rocket loaded with supplies for astronauts aboard the International Space Station exploded in Virginia, a Russian cargo ship delivered its goods to the orbiting science platform.
At 6:22 p.m. Tuesday, an Antares rocket loaded with 2,300 kg of supplies and science experiments crashed and exploded six seconds after liftoff. Orbital Sciences Corporation’s Cygnus craft was aboard the rocket.
Carrying more than 2,500 kg of food, fuel and supplies the unpiloted ISS Progress 57 lifted off at 3:09 a.m. EDT. It docked with the space station at 9:08 a.m.
It is expected to remain docked to the Pirs Docking Compartment of the station for the next six months.
