Transportation security enhanced in wake of Ottawa shooting

It’s a familiar scene at airports across the country, and something air travellers have come to expect.

But at the Calgary international airport, security goes beyond these routine pre-flight inspections.

“There are a lot of things that you don’t see that go on at the airport, and a lot of things that you do see its about making sure that we keep our staff and our passengers safe all the time,” said Jody Moseley, a spokesperson for the Calgary Airport Authority.

Airport security was increased earlier this month after Canada’s terrorism threat level was raised from low to medium.

But despite that, and the Ottawa shooting, anxiety levels are low among air travellers.

“I don’t know.. it is what it is,” said Casey Barylski.

“I think its just another random event – lots of individuals,” added Brent Kelly.

Transit officials are also taking precautions.

The Toronto Transit Commission quickly issued a statement Wednesday to say the number of personnel on patrol would be increased.

Calgary transit isn’t going that far.

But officials have told staff members to be on the lookout for suspicious activity.

“We want to make sure that we’re not going to be missing anything, that we’re always looking for anything suspicious and if that happens staff should be reporting it to our control centre,” said Ron Collins, spokesperson for Calgary Transit.

Members of the public are also encouraged to keep their eyes open and report anything of concern to police.
