Woman hoping to keep pet raccoon in Saskatoon

Watch above: Saskatoon woman fights to keep pet raccoon

SASKATOON – He’s the centre of their universe, he even sleeps with the couple every night.

This isn’t just any pet – Dennis is a raccoon.

Weighing close to 30 lbs, 18-month-old Dennis loves going for walks and scrambled eggs are his favourite meal.

Rescued at birth by Wendy Hook, she says he just melted her heart and has been her answer to ‘empty nest syndrome.’

Provincially, raccoons are allowed as pets but the problem is Dennis is prohibited in Saskatoon by a city bylaw.

“I went down to city hall to inquire about getting an exotic pet licence for him – and that’s when they told me that it was against bylaw,” said Hook.

In the meantime, Dennis and Wendy are staying at a friend’s house in Martensville until the city gives them the green light to come back.

Hook says if her masked bandit isn’t allowed within city limits, she’ll move.
