TORONTO — Actress Katie Holmes could be heading back to Ontario early next year to once again portray Jackie Kennedy Onassis on TV.

Producers said Monday that Holmes has signed on for The Kennedys – After Camelot, a follow-up to the 2011 miniseries The Kennedys. The 35-year-old will also direct one episode and serve as an executive producer of the project.

Ottawa-raised director Jon Cassar (24) will direct the other three episodes. He called the shots on the original eight-part series, which was filmed in Toronto and Hamilton.

In The Kennedys, Holmes played Jackie Kennedy Onassis opposite Greg Kinnear as John F. Kennedy. Canadian actor Barry Pepper earned an Emmy Award for outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or movie for his portrayal of Bobby Kennedy.

Holmes made The Kennedys in the summer of 2010 while still married to Tom Cruise. She and their daughter Suri Cruise lived in a rented home in Toronto’s tony Hogg’s Hollow neighbourhood and enjoyed weekend outings in the region — including visits to Centreville amusement park on Toronto Island and to Whittamore’s Berry Farm in nearby Markham.

The follow-up is based on J. Randy Taraborrelli’s 2012 book After Camelot: A Personal History of the Kennedy Family 1968 to the Present.

Shaw Media, parent company of Global News, was a production partner for 2011’s The Kennedys.
