The Okanagan Correctional Centre is hiring

OSOYOOS– With construction of a 378 cell, high-security correctional facility underway near Oliver, BC corrections is in the very early stages of working to fill it’s front line positions.

The Okanagan Correctional Centre won’t open until 2016 but already more than 350 people have registered to learn more about becoming a corrections officer.

BC Corrections is holding a number of orientation sessions this week to give potential applicants an overview of what it takes to work inside a correctional facility.

The prison brings with it the promise of secure, government employment with solid wages.

Something that’s hard to come by in the rural South Okanagan where seasonal work is the norm.

The only education requirement for a corrections officer position is a high school diploma and all training is done after hiring.

The facility will be built on Osoyoos Indian Band land.

BC Corrections plans to hire about 40% of the facility’s workforce locally and transfer the balance of the staff in from other facilities.

About two dozen people attended the first orientation session Monday evening, more sessions are scheduled in Osoyoos, Oliver and Penticton this week with more in depth readiness sessions scheduled for the weeks following.
