CN asked to clean up Kelowna railway dump

KELOWNA — It’s an eyesore and a public health hazard and the City of Kelowna wants it cleaned up.

Next to the official landfill, this is probably Kelowna’s second largest dump.

It’s a mishmash of various materials collected by transients and scattered over land owned by Canadian National railway.

Amongst the debris, several used hypodermic needles.

Last week, CN Rail police gave the boot to the transients, who cut a hole in a fence to access the property.

Now the city wants the railway to remove the mess.

“If they don’t, it would fall under the same realm as anybody with an unsightly premise,” says city spokesman, Tom Wilson. “We follow that process to notify them and they have a certain time limit to clean it up and they’d be compelled to do that.  We hope it doesn’t come to that.  They’ve been cooperative up to this point.”

The fire department attended to the site this morning on a hazardous needle pickup complaint.

However, they missed some of the needles scattered amongst the wide swath of discarded items.
