Southern Alberta reacts to Jim Prentice

It’s been a busy three weeks for Alberta’s new Premier.

Charged with turning around the tarnished reputation of his Progressive Conservative party, Jim Prentice went right to work.

He reduced cabinet members from 29 to 19, scrapped a new license plate design, sold the government’s taxpayer-funded planes, and ordered a full review of rural health care.

Those are just a few of the issues Prentice has addressed, and Wild Rose MLA Pat Stier is pleased with what he’s seen.

“I’m happy to see that we’ve got our changes coming to the forefront that we’ve always wanted to see, and we hope to see more. I think this shows the value of a good Opposition.”

The PC’s are facing a mounting challenge from the NDP in Southern Alberta.

Notably, Lethbridge West Candidate Shannon Phillips, who nearly won the riding in 2012.

Phillips believes the PC’s are only backpedaling from previous mistakes.

“This is the exact same playbook that the Conservatives have used not only to elect Miss Redford, who was a disaster and had to quit as a result, but also Mister. Stelmach.”

One Lethbridge resident is of the same belief as Phillips and isn’t ready to trust the Conservative government.

“We’ve had 40 years of Conservative government. promise after promise after promise, decade after decade of broken promises and I don’t see anything that convinces me that things will be different.”

Another resident couldn’t disagree more, saying:

“His first two weeks were just excellent. when he got rid of the liscence plate thing that saved us 14 million dollars, keeping the centre open in red deer was just great.”

Clearly, some are happy with the changes. For others, there’s a damaged reputation still in need of repair.
