WATCH: Lake Country Food Bank needs votes to win $100,000 for upgraded facility

WINFIELD, B.C. — The Lake Country Food Bank says it’s trapped in a facility that’s grown to small for and now volunteers are turning to the community to help.

The current facility is a mere three rooms in the former Winfield Elementary school and it’s used to feed more than 600 people a month.

Phyllis MacPherson has run the food bank for more than 30 years and says it’s in desperate need of a larger, permanent home.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We’re walking all over each other at times here. I’m getting frustrated because things are not proper. It’s time for a new building,” says MacPherson

Unfortunately, the food bank doesn’t have the means to build a new facility on their own and that’s where the Aviva Fund comes in. Every year, Aviva Insurance divides $1-million in donations amongst several worthy community projects. The winning projects are chosen by the community in an online vote.

The Rotary Club of Lake Country has nominated the Food Bank as an Aviva project. Now, it’s up to the community. The more votes the project gets, the more likely they are to win up to $100,000 towards construction.

The food bank is currently in 35th place of roughly 500 entries, but there’s still a long way to go before they make it to the next round.

Residents can vote for the food bank online by visiting https://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf19456 before October 14th.
