WINNIPEG – Fire crews were battling a blaze a south Winnipeg swimming pool Tuesday morning.

The call to the Margaret Grant pool at 685 Dalhousie Dr. in Fort Richmond came in at about 10 a.m.

City officials say the fire was in the basement, sparked when construction workers who were digging up a concrete floor ignited a paper construction product underneath.

There were no members of the public at the pool, but city staff and construction workers were forced outside. Two people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

At one point, fire fighters who were inside the building fighting the fire were ordered out for safety reasons. The city says the pool is closed until further notice.
