Measles scare at Seattle’s Sea-Tac airport

VANCOUVER — Canadian travelers that have recently passed through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport were possibly exposed to the measles virus, according to a recent release from King County.

The release states public health officials are investigating a confirmed case of measles infection in a traveler that passed through the airport during the contagious period of the disease. They suspect the person was exposed to measles outside of the United States.

Officials say anyone who was in the vicinity of the North Satellite Terminal – including the interterminal train and baggage claim from 8:10 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 9 or The Bistro, a restaurant at the Courtyard Seattle Federal Way hotel from 9:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. should be on guard for symptoms.

“If you were at either of these locations during the times listed above and are not immune to measles, the most likely time you would become sick is between September 13 and September 27,” according to the release. It describes measles as a highly contagious disease, causing: fever, rash, cough and red, water eyes that is spread through the air.

Although most people have immunity to measles through vaccination, health officials say that anyone in these general locations on Sept. 9 should call a health care provider if symptoms develop.
