HALIFAX – The ferry service between Nova Scotia and Maine this year is ending nearly three weeks earlier than planned.

Nova Star Cruises has announced it will make its final run from Yarmouth, N.S., to Portland, Maine, on Oct. 14.

The last sailing date was originally scheduled for Nov. 2.

Mark Amundsen, CEO of Nova Star Cruises, has apologized in a statement to passengers for the inconvenience.

Amundsen says the company’s ability to secure enough business through motor coach tours in October was hindered because of when it was chosen to run the service.

The government of Nova Scotia announced last November that Nova Star Cruises would run the service.

Amundsen says 23 motor coach tours have been booked for this season and 31 are already planned for next year.

About 650 passengers will be affected and Nova Star Cruises says they will be given full refunds, a free reservation for the rest of the time the service is operating or a 50 per cent discount for the same booking next year.
