SASKATOON – The Manitoba Bisons and Saskatchewan Huskies have a lot of history together, and if recent history proves anything, it’s that not much separates these two storied programs.
In 2013, the Huskies and Bisons met three time. Those three games were decided by a total of ten points.
The final game was decided by just one point and happened to be the Canada West Semi Final, where the Bisons ended the Huskies season.
“We played them three times and every time we played them it was a close game,” recalled Huskies defensive lineman Clayton Sarich.
“To lose by one point in the playoffs killed us.”
What better way to kick off the 2014 season? Two of the most evenly matched teams in the conference, the sixth ranked Bisons and the tenth ranked Huskies, renew their rivalry Friday night at Griffiths Stadium.
“Our rivalry with Manitoba has definitely grown,” admits linebacker Dane Bishop.
“I thought the guys are definitely jacked, especially after what happened at the end of last season.”
Huskies quarterback Drew Burko agrees.
“Just the way we ended last season. That was in a disappointing note and now it’s great to have another shot at it.”
Last season’s three meetings were virtually even.
Manitoba outrushed the Huskies by 55 yards. The Dogs had nine more passing yards and two fewer turnovers, while their 79 first downs were one less the Bisons 80.
Anthony Coombs may have been the “X” factor in 2013 for the Bisons, but it was quarterback Jordan Yantz who did the most damage to the green and white in 2013, averaging 370 passing yards and 69 rushing yards against the U of S, while adding ten touchdowns.
Containing Yantz is the number one priority for Bryan Towriss’s defense.
“He can hurt you a lot of ways and it’s going to be a good test for some of the new guys on our d-line. They are going to put pressure on our edges and those guys have to perform well.”
After three epic battles in 2013, the Huskies and Bisons collide for the first time in 2014 Friday night, 7 p.m. at Griffiths Stadium.
The game will also be broadcast live on Shaw TV Saskatoon.
