Pedestrian hit in early morning Winnipeg crash dies

WINNIPEG – A driver knew a woman pedestrian he hit at St. Mary’s and St. Anne’s roads early Wednesday, police say.

The 35-year-old woman was in critical condition in hospital where she later died. The 35-year-old man is being held in custody and charges are expected, police said at a news conference Wednesday.

Emergency workers were dispatched to the crash shortly after 2:30 a.m. and kept the busy intersection closed through the morning rush hour.

Police wouldn’t say whether the woman had been in the vehicle before she was hit. Neither person was identified by police, who didn’t say how they knew each other.

The crash caused traffic backups as it blocked two major roads into the downtown from south Winnipeg until just before 9 a.m.
