TORONTO – A major interstate caused chaos for drivers in Virginia on Monday after temporary lane striping shifted into a squiggly mess.
According to ABC affiliate WJLA, after work was done on a portion of Interstate 66 through Fairfax County over the weekend, the lane striping that was used peeled and moved.
The result was a road that appeared to be designed by Dr. Seuss.
The lines curved and trailed off into different directions. Some lanes even overlapped.
Commuters on Monday morning were left puzzled as they tried to navigate through the dangerous part of the interstate, which heads eastbound towards Washington D.C.
Crews closed off part of the roadway for most of the day to fix the error after the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) received multiple complaints.
“We apologize for contributing to a lousy Monday morning on 66,” VDOT public affairs director Joan Morris told WTOP.
Although the mishap caused confusion among drivers, no major accidents or delays were reported.
VDOT is investigating what caused the lane striping to pull away from the road.
