Watch above: A warning for drivers to pay attention – not just to the road – but to your surroundings, after a motorcyclist was injured in a crash with a moose. Quinn Ohler reports.

EDMONTON – A motorcyclist was sent to hospital with serious injuries Tuesday night after crashing into a moose in north Edmonton.

The collision happened on the north leg of Anthony Henday Drive at 10:30 p.m.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

According to police, motorcyclist was driving west when he hit the animal somewhere between 127 St. and Campbell Rd.

The road was closed for a few hours while police investigated the collision.

Stephen Quinton of Alberta Fish and Wildlife says his department responds to nearly 100 calls, on average, regarding moose within city limits. So far this year, they’ve been called to 60.

Where wildlife numbers are especially high like in Banff National Park, wildlife fences can be installed. There’s one that runs throughout the park along Highway 1.

At this point, Alberta Transportation says there’s no evidence to warrant the fences in Edmonton — except on the new northeast leg of the Henday over the North Saskatchewan River.

A spokesperson calls Tuesday’s occurrence “rare,” meaning that for now, the onus is on drivers to slow down and keep their eyes peeled.

“Search from the ditch line to the ditch line,” said AMA driving instructor Rick Lang. “Because it can happen so quick.”
