A late change for a team in the Tour de France has opened the door for Canadian cyclist Christian Meier to take part.
Meier says he was on vacation when he forgot the surprise phone call.
“It’s been a whirlwind the past 48 hours, I was on holidays with my wife when we got the call that I might have to get over there to start the tour.”
Meier says other rider crashed during training during the week, requiring six stitches to his hand.
“I was always meant to be the first reserve, if anything happened, and at the end of the day, something did happen,” says Meier.
Meier left Vancouver on Thursday, and is now in England for the start of the race. It’s his first Tour de France.
“Tomorrow the excitement should really sink in — the crowds here in the UK are quite big,” says Meier.
